Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP)

The ACHIP collaboration, funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore foundation for a 5 year period, pursues basic R&D for a super compact accelerator on a chip, where the accelerating structure is a dielectric microstructure excited by a laser. PSI will contribute to this by providing the international collaboration with access to the high-brightness electron beams in SwissFEL, where we are planning to do a proof-of-principle demonstration of the acceleration of a relativistic beam.

Transverse Profile Imager

A transverse profile monitor that images scintillation or transition radiation onto a CMOS camera. The design achieves a high resolution by observing the Snell-Descartes law of refraction in the scintillating crystal and allows for a large field of view by taking into account the Scheimpflug imaging condition. This monitor is being developed for SwissFEL. First tests at the SwissFEL Injector Test Facility demonstrate resolution and sensitivity sufficient to measure slice emittance of a 10 pC beam.

Longitudinal Diagnostics for SwissFEL

Monitors for time-resolved measurements of the beam properties in SwissFEL: Compression monitors, Electro-optical monitors, RF deflecting structures. We have also started preparatory work on the integration of these diagnostics into a feedback system.

ADAQA

An accelerator data acquisition and analysis framework, initially developed for the SwissFEL Injector Test Facility. This Matlab framework allows operators to perform scan and data acquisition tasks. The toolkit has been extended for an easy access to common measurements in the accelerator.

Outreach

I have helped develop expositions for the Open House Days at PSI.

Media

> PSI Open House Day 2011: Apfelschuss
Modeled after the Swiss classic of Wilhelm Tell, we presented a crossbow marksman shooting an apple. A high-speed camera was used to record a movie when the bolt hit the apple.
Video

> Guided Tours and Open House at DESY
I prepared several presentations for the Open House and for public tours at DESY.
